Chapter 65
Not long after he left, I put him to the back of my mind and tried to focus on my work. Reaching the coffee machine I pushed for a cappuccino. If felt good to be in the zone again, good to be at work and actually doing my job.
Ally was out sick today and I didn't realise until I read up on my emails.
I had swapped Mia out of my service and put her with Holly instead. Today wasn't turning out to be a good day for me and she deserved my full attention. It wouldn't be
fair on her.
A Starbucks cup was placed in front of me. "Call it a peace offering sweetheart".
I never could stay mad at Jared.
Lifting the coffee I took a sip. "You didn't come all the way down here just to give me coffee. What's going on?".
"Can't I just come down and see my favourite girl?". He smirked.
"If you're here to check up on me then there's no need. I'm okay I'm just busy".
"I saw Blaze this morning".
"Yeah, I know. He came here, called things off. He's moving into the clubhouse for a while".
"Hold up". He frowned. "What do you mean called things off?".
I shrugged because I wasn't sure what he meant. "He said I didn't trust him and until I do, we couldn't work".
"Fuck, sweetheart". He placed his arm around my shoulder. "How you feeling about it?".
"It's his choice". I reached my office. "If this is what he wants then I can't stop it".
"Fuck off".
"What?".
"Ain't no way he's finished it. The fucker would rather die than give you up".
"I don't have time to talk about it".
"There's no fucking way Ava".
"What do you want me to say Jared? Is it because I'm not cooped up in bed crying my eyes out? Or because I'm not making a big song and dance about it?".
"Well yeah". He scratched the back of his head. "Last time you were pretty upset and now".
"Like I said it was his choice. Now I want to ask you something".
"What's that?".
"Male patient was brought in last night beaten to a pulp with several bullet wounds. Did Blaze have anything to do with that?".
"Oh, that". He smirked. "I'm surprised the fuckers still alive".
"Who is it, Jared?". Sitting in my chair behind my desk I sipped on my coffee.
"Mind the fucker that put me in hospital?".
I frowned then realisation kicked in. "Do not tell me that the guy in room 5 is who knocked up Sasha?".
"That's the one". He smirked.
"Blaze did that to him?". My voice was barely a whisper. I've always known what he's capable of but to actually see the damage he could do to someone was frightening.
"The fuckers lucky he didn't set him on fire. He's called Blaze for a reason sweetheart". A laugh fell from his lips, and I felt violently sick.
"I have to get back to work". My stomach churned. He set people on fire?
"You bringing the little lady by later?". He followed me out into the corridor.
"As she's staying with Blaze tonight, I will be dropping her off".
A laugh fell from his lips. "That shit won't last Ava. He'll be back within a day".
"I didn't kick him out this time. He wants to stay at the clubhouse then I'm not going to stop him".
"Whatever you say sweetheart. I'll catch you later".
"Thanks for the coffee".
Rounding the corner I stopped by the surgery board. The guy in number 5 had been rescheduled for tomorrow morning.
"He's not doing so good". Josh spoke.
"I'm surprised he's alive".
"I don't think he'll survive much longer. He must be mixed up in some bad shit to be left looking like that".
"Yeah". I was still trying to wrap my head around what Blaze was capable of.
"Cops have been swarming all morning but there's no way they'll get the chance to talk to him".
The cops were here?
"Does he have any family that need to be notified?". I asked.
"No family, no next of kin. This one's a loner. It's a shame really".
I felt the guilt deep within me but why? This wasn't my fault; this wasn't anything to do with me. Blaze took care of business like he always did only this time I saw it up close and personal.
"Ava?".
"Sorry, what?".
"I'm going to check on him. Do you want to come?".
"I've been paged to go to the ER". That was a lie. "I'll check in later though". I couldn't spend time with that patient. Not when my emotions weren't exactly stable.
"I'll catch you later then".
"Bye". I hurried off down the corridor. Josh wasn't stupid and I wasn't exactly the best at keeping secrets.
For how busy the hospital was the ER was unusually quiet. I had seen around 4 patients and I had been here most of the morning.
I went and got myself some coffee and cake. Decaf of course. I had been craving something sweet all morning. Blaze had yet to reach out since he left. Other than the text about wanting Everleigh for the night and if I said no, I'd be the bad one.
"Dr Mendez".
"Yes Maggie?". I smiled at the charge nurse.
"I have a young girl in room 4. Can't be any older than 17. Bruised face and possibly a fractured jaw".
"Want me to have a look?".
"Something is off". She whispered. "The guy that brought her in is answering every question. The girl won't even look at me".
"Boyfriend?".
"Claims to be but my gut is telling me something is wrong".
"Any other injuries?". My stomach tightened at the thoughts going through my head.
"He won't let me examine her. Only wants me to clean up her face".
"I bet he does". With a chap on the door I entered, Maggie close behind.
Her face wasn't half bruised. "I'm Dr Mendez. Do you mind telling me what happened?".
"She fell down the stairs".
I glanced at the man with her. "Do you mind if I take a look?". I smiled at the girl. "What's your name?".
"Her names Ashley. Look can you just fix her up so we can go. We've got places we need to be".
"Excuse me but I'm going to have to ask you to step out so I can examine her". Something was definitely off.
"Yeah, that ain't happening".
"Ashley, can I take a look at your face?".
She glanced at me for a second before giving me a quick nod. I looked over the bruising on her face and pressed my fingers across her cheekbone and down her jaw
line.
A cry fell from her lips.
Something was either fractured or broken.
"Yeah, you've definitely done something here. I want to send you for an x-ray. Maggie can you page Dr Amaro and-...".
"She's not going for an x-ray. We're leaving". He grabbed hold of the girl's arm. "Let's go Ashley".
"I wouldn't let this go untreated; she could have a broken jaw".
"Thanks for the help doc but it's just a couple of bruises".
"He's right I'll be fine. I just want to go home".
I shouldn't have let her leave.
